by Walter Chaw Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven's Scream cycle, in terms of its influence on modern film, constitutes the most important metatext of the last 25 years in that it's not only self-referential, it's curious about how self-reference can be an essential ontological tool as opposed to a mere existential exercise. They're better movies, in this respect, than The Matrix and its sequels, and, at least in terms of their popularity, they're more important than even Charlie Kaufman's extraordinary but limited-appeal body of work. The Scream saga, for lack of a better word, matters. Not for nothing does Scream 3, despite being the weakest installment of the original four and the only one of those that didn't involve Williamson in any significant way, take place mainly on a simulacrum of hero Sidney's childhood home and neighbourhood, recreated inside a soundstage like the to-scale streets of Kaufman's Synecdoche, New York. If the first film is a watershed, the second is perhaps the series' masterpiece: a phenomenal bit of pop philosophy that sees Sidney (Neve Campbell) as a Cassandra figure, literally forced onto the stage with a pack of masked murderers to re-enact her trauma from and into eternity. It's her role in these Passion Plays to be preyed upon--and through her suffering, the "rules" of engagement between women coming of sexual age and men wanting to possess and punish them for that are forged. She has become an archetype, a thing that is representative of a fundamental truth, and the movies understand that. When she makes her entrance in the new Scream (hereafter Scream 5), standing up in a hospital waiting area to greet a young woman initiated into the abattoir, it is framed and shot as though we are all in the presence of a divine visitation.
By the end of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett's excellent continuation of the franchise following Craven's 2015 passing, the pressing question--the extent to which Sidney is aware that she herself is in a film--is explored with the kind of casual aplomb that speaks to extraordinary confidence on the part of the filmmakers, including co-writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Sidney certainly seems to know. Fellow returning regulars Dewey (David Arquette) and Gail Weathers (Courteney Cox) seem to know, too. Scream 5 is acutely aware of the "rules" to this game, i.e., what's expected of a sequel, and in the tradition of previous entries, it honours, comments on, and challenges those expectations while celebrating slasher fandom--even as it's clear that the fetishists among the fans have become dangerous in their loud and obnoxious impotence. Like any good Cassandra play, Scream 5 is about knowledge. The motive of the new killer or killers differs from the first four films in that it's rooted in neither the desire for notoriety nor some voyeuristic kink. It's not vengeance, not legacy necessarily--it's misdirected anger at horror being "taken over" on one side by the Morlocks who want their nostalgia gratified like spoiled children, and on the other by elitists who use terms like "elevated horror" when they find themselves accidentally liking a picture in a devalued (by them) genre. Scream 5 has disdain for the two halves of that coin, and the atrocities it portrays are the direct result of horror's gatekeepers. The picture's metatext becomes how the worst of the worst are now the fabricators of terror and pain, their power bestowed upon them by the masters of their objects of worship in exchange for a few pieces of silver. It's a smart picture not just for how timely it is, but also because it makes sense that the franchise would evolve to the point of criticizing the impulse that keeps the cycle of atrocity alive: how slasher franchises and branding women for the sins of their mothers might have their root in the same psychosexual clay.
But I'm getting ahead of myself. Scream 5 opens with teenage Tara Carpenter (Jenny Ortega), tough as nails despite her asthma, getting a wrong-number call on her landline and, against her better judgment, entertaining the voice on the other end until it's obvious the caller is a psycho. The subsequent stalking of her and assault on her body is horrifying and brutal, and the film announces itself as deadly serious about delivering the goods. Tara's estranged sister Sam (Melissa Barrera), her name a tribute to "Sam Loomis" from John Carpenter's Halloween (and Carpenter himself, natch), returns to idyllic suburb Woodsboro with nebbish boyfriend Richie (Jack Quaid) in tow to suss out who did it. Tara has a close-knit circle of friends--the sons and daughters, some of them, of characters from the prequels, and of course the prime suspect will be culled from among them. Veterans of the series will probably guess the murderer's or murderers' identity right away (there are usually two killers working in cahoots), though Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett introduce enough red herrings to provide reasonable doubt. Eventually, word travels back to Dewey, now unemployed and living in a trailer; to Gail, who hosts a live morning show; and to Sidney, a mother of daughters doing her best to escape her past. I was more moved than I thought I'd be to see them reunited in a common, heroic cause. In ways both superficial and not so, Scream 5 is The Force Awakens for the slasher set.
The best scene in the film isn't one of the many superlative bloodletting passages, but rather the reunion between Dewey and Gail. Gail's angry because Dewey left her after she got her big break at a major studio, and Dewey's angry because he slipped away in the night like a coward. She tells him that he's anything but a coward, and he says that at least the mornings are endurable, because that's when he can watch her on television and imagine they have a life together still. Knowledge of Cox and Arquette's own real-life courtship, marriage, and subsequent separation add to the intense melancholy of a moment already elevated by the empathy of the script and performances from two actors who were never better than they are as these characters. Gail's belief in Dewey is what drives his courage in confronting the monster later in the film; his longing for her and regret concerning how the chips fell is what drives her courage to do the same. There are extraordinary depths to plumb here in terms of their relational dynamics, not just as franchise stalwarts but as human beings in the world, and as representations of larger truths about how we behave over the course of a long-term relationship. Scream 5 is on par with the original and perhaps just a half-step back from the second in that it challenges how one approaches horror movies not as mythology but as metatext. It wonders about the increasingly diaphanous boundary between what an audience desires and what a film feels obliged to offer in response, taking the position that the way to sickness and death--spiritual as well as creative--is to make pandering nostalgia instead of art. Sam wonders at one point if all these people are dying because of some stupid "fanfic," and Scream 5 answers that she is, that we all are. We're far along that downward spiral. This movie's so good. THE BLU-RAY DISC
by Bill Chambers Paramount brings "Scream 5" to Blu-ray Disc in a 2.39:1, 1080p transfer. There is a physical 4K UHD release we did not receive for review, although I did have an opportunity to compare its HDR presentation to the SDR Blu-ray and found it to be superior in at least one facet. Replacing franchise mainstay Peter Deming, new DP Brett Jutkiewicz shot the feature using state-of-the-art anamorphic lenses that curb the optical artifacts responsible for much of the series' visual charm and aesthetic signature, i.e., those extremely shallow depths of field that blunted detail and amplified the lurking presence of Ghostface by throwing them out of focus in the background. While the 4K version tips the film into the darker territory of Deming (enough so that I would recommend holding out for it), the new Scream's televisual glaze seems hardwired into it not just photographically but also by virtue of a colour grade that looks fresh out of the camera. This being said, the image on the Blu-ray is sharp and vivid--unimpeachable, really, from a technical standpoint, some stray camera noise notwithstanding. And the attendant 7.1 DTS-HD MA track is vintage Scream, after a slight boost in volume to bring it up to reference level. Lots of shrieking strings punctuated by thunderbolts of bass; lots of jolting ringtones and playful, frazzled pans as the sound designers endeavour to keep up with the Steadicam. I love how big these movies continue to sound. Be warned that the menu music is startlingly loud.
Extras begin with a feature-length commentary that reunites screenwriters James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, co-directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, and executive producer Chad Villella. I complain often about yakkers that narrate the film, but here's one that might go too far in the opposite direction by chewing anecdotes like gum. Seven minutes in, the filmmakers are on their seventh agonizing minute of recapping how they came to be hired to make the fifth Scream--a story that amounts to, "We were asked." This is an unusually writer-focused dialogue (perhaps since Vanderbilt led the charge in getting the project going), and I did enjoy hearing some of the details about the conceptualization of the screenplay, as well as these Scream superfans' thoughts on the previous films. (They tread lightly but clearly believe Scre4m to be the weakest of the bunch.) But it's surprising that such long-winded folks managed to hammer out a script in apparently record time--one that, for what it's worth, didn't change much from the treatment stage except to accommodate the vagaries of production.
Also on board are three Dewey-centric deleted/extended scenes and three HD featurettes. "New Blood" (8 mins.), the first of these mini-docs, is about how the 1996 Scream was special and everybody's happy to be either back or part of the legacy. We learn that all of the body art an unrecognizable Kyle Gallner wears on screen is in homage to Wes Craven films, including Nancy's address in A Nightmare on Elm Street. (It goes unmentioned that Gallner was in the awful remake.) Amid the chorus of self-congratulation for Scream 5's diverse casting in "Bloodlines" (9 mins.), Neve Campbell reveals that she answers the door on Halloween in the Ghostface mask. Costume designer Emily Gunshor's remark that she attired Jenna Ortega in light pink for the opening scene in homage to Drew Barrymore's outfit from the original stood out to me as baffling, not only because Barrymore wears an off-white sweater in Scream but also because the editors even cut to a contradictory clip of Barrymore in said sweater. Lastly, "In the Shadow of the Master" (7 mins.) is a sweet tribute to the late Craven that, don't get me wrong, he deserves--but what's Kevin Williamson? Chop liver? Williamson, for what it's worth, is interviewed and graciously defers the spotlight to the man he calls his mentor. As for the trio of elisions, I'm not sure why they were cut, and there's no commentary on hand to explain it. It occurs to me you'd want to exploit these last precious moments with Dewey/Arquette for all they're worth. The keepcase includes a code for a digital copy of the film.
