September 18, 2000

Who says there aren't any trends in the films of 2000? While we haven't had a rash of flaming asteroid movies or Christopher Columbus epics, there are motifs to be gleaned from this year's pictures, and at the recent T.I.F.F., I kept a tally.

Counting shorts and "Preludes", percentage of films I saw that contained:

  • Recreational drug use (not counting alcohol) - 45%
  • The plot twist of lesbianism - 25%
  • People moving in fast speed but speaking normally - 15%
  • Violent stabbings - 15%
  • The sexualization of adolescent girls - 15%
  • People getting hit by cars - 10%
  • An appearance by Sarah Polley - 10%
  • An appearance by Don McKellar - 10%
  • An appearance by both Don McKellar and Sarah Polley - 5%

Feel free to draw your own conclusions!
